The Canadian Chopin Piano Competition takes place every five years, in conjunction with the International F. Chopin Piano Competition held in Warsaw, Poland. The competition is open to Canadian pianists, and there are three divisions; Junior, Intermediate, and Senior. Competitors perform works by Chopin for a jury of internationally renowned pianists: Krzysztof Jablonski (chair), Magdalena Baczewska, Avan Yu, Jane Coop, and Ian Hobson. The Senior Division features pianists born between 1995 and 2009. Twelve quarter-finalists from the virtual preliminary round were selected by the jury to progress to the in-person round, held at Mazzoleni Hall at the TELUS Centre for Performance & Learning in Toronto, Ontario on January 10th where they performed selected works by Chopin representing a range of genres. Eight pianists proceeded to the semi-finals the following day: performing an entire set of mazurkas and a sonata. Five finalists were selected to perform the Polonaise Fantasie and their choice of Chopin piano concerto into Koerner Hall on January 13th. After three days of incredible performances, the jury selected the three winners of the Sixth Canadian Chopin Piano Competition, Senior Division. Four additional prizes were awarded by the jury. In addition to the cash prizes, the three winners will receive funds toward their travel expenses in the preliminary round of the 19th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, and a simplified qualification procedure bypassing the work of the qualifying committee. All their performances can be found at our YouTube Channel.
