Joshua Kwan (Age 13)
Joshua Kwan started his piano journey at the age of four. His first exposure was a group lesson “Music for Young Children” in Vancouver, BC. He participated his first piano competition at the age of 5 and won first prize in the SCMTA Sonatina Sonata Festival in Everett, WA. It is still one of the most memorable experience for him. Since then he has participated in many local and regional events and consistently win top prizes. He is currently taking lessons with Dr. Carl Petersson, pianist and Naxos recording artist and former piano lecturer at Changsha Normal University and University of Music Wroclaw, Poland.
Joshua recently had a debut public performance in Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s 5th annual Day of Music celebration in June 2024 at Pyatt Hall, a 30 minute recital featuring works from Beethoven, Chopin, Mendelssohn and Heather Schmidt.
Joshua was a finalist and prize winner at the 2024 Pacific Rim International Piano Competition, a gold medalist for 2023 Steinway Piano Competition Canada and first place winner for 2023 Architecture of Music Competition (Vancouver, BC) and a gold medalist for 2023 Sea to Sky Outdoor Piano Competition (Langley, BC). His other accomplishments in 2023 and 2024 are passing the RCM Level 10 Piano Performance Exam and Level 10 Harmony Exam with highest distinction and made the honor lists for RCM level 8 and 9 Harmony Exams. He was invited to perform at Carnegie Hall as winner of the 2023 Steinway Piano Competition and 2023 Sea to Sky Outdoor Piano Competition.
In recent years, he had attended multiple prestigious music festivals and had masterclasses with award-winning pianist Gabriela Montero, Dr Krzysztof Jablonski, Professor Jerome Lowenthal, Michael Lewin, Professor Kevin Kenner, Professor Greg Presley (Gonzaga University), Mark Anderson (University of British Columbia) and Dr. Melani Mestre, pianist and world renown conductor.
