Murasaki Matsutani is a nine years old pianist, born in Tokyo, Japan, and moved to Waterloo, Canada at age of two. She is currently studying the piano with Michael Berkovsky and composition with Eugene Astapov. She has also worked with great musicians including Martin Garcia-Garcia and Ilya Itin. She currently attends the Taylor Academy at Royal Conservatory of Music as the youngest piano student.
She has won numerous awards in local and international competitions. She was awarded the 2nd prize at the inaugural Nashville International Chopin competition in the under 10 years old young artist category, in November 2023. She was awarded the 2nd prize in the under 12 years old category at the 3rd Jeune Chopin international competition held in Lugano, Switzerland, in January 2023. She won the first prize in the under 14 years old category in 2023 Unionville music competition.
She is also passionate about performing in recitals. She was invited to play at the concerts, a tribute to late Nelson Freire, in Lausanne, Switzerland, in August 2023 where she had an honour to play alongside Martha Argerich on the same stage.
In a recent sold-out event with more than five hundreds audience, she was invited to play all three movements of Mozart piano concerto No.11 as a featured soloist with Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra. She also played Chopin’s piano concerto No.1 2nd movement with Myriade quartet.
Her favorite composers are Chopin, Bach and Mozart. When she grows up, she wants to be a composer and a conductor, and her dream is to compose her own opera.
