Biography – Scott Nguyen (Age 11)
Currently a Grade 7 student, Scott began his piano journey three years ago as a self-taught player before starting formal lessons two and a half years ago with Professor Timothy Steeves at Memorial University of Newfoundland. At age 10, he passed the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) Level 10 exam, and by age 11, he earned his ARCT with First Class Honors.
In July 2024, Scott competed in the Federation of Canadian Music Festival (FCMF) National Music Festival, representing Newfoundland and Labrador in the Emerging Artist category (for participants up to 30 years old). He made his debut at a concert for the Tuckamore Music Festival in 2022 and has consistently won several first-place awards at the Kiwanis Music Festivals.
In February 2024, Scott performed live for Sara Davis Buechner during her visit to St. John’s, where she praised him as "one of the most gifted kids" she had ever seen. He has also played in online masterclasses given by pianists such as Jarred Dunn, Dominic Cheli, and Lisa Yui on the Tonebase platform, further honing his craft.
Beyond piano, Scott has diverse interests. He is a competitive swimmer with the St. John’s Legends Swimming Club, a former chess champion in his age group, and a winner of First Prize (Atlantic region) in the 2024 Canada Kangaroo Math Competition. He enjoys reading about geography and social issues, playing football and basketball, and occasionally immersing himself in computer games.
