Xingxiu Zhang

Junior Division

Nocturne in E flat major, op. 9, no. 2

At just ten years old, Xingxiu has already spent six years cultivating a deep connection with the piano, an instrument that has become an extension of his soul. His musical journey began when he was only four, and it quickly became evident that Xingxiu possessed a unique gift. Not only does he excel at playing the piano, but he also has an extraordinary ability to sense and interpret emotions in music.

A particularly striking example of this came when he first heard Dua Lipa's "Scared to Be Lonely." Despite never having heard the song before, Xingxiu instinctively recognized the sadness woven into its melody, demonstrating an innate emotional sensitivity rare for his age. This keen perception allows him to connect with the music on a profound level, something that translates into his own playing.

For Xingxiu, the piano is more than just an instrument; it’s a medium through which he expresses his innermost feelings. Whether he’s happy, contemplative, or even a little bit sad, his emotions flow seamlessly through the keys, creating a symphony of sound that tells his personal story. Each performance reflects his inner world, and it’s this ability to convey emotion that makes his music so captivating.

Playing the piano is Xingxiu’s passion, a way of showing who he is without words. He takes immense pride in his achievements and sees his music as a testament to his hard work and dedication. For Xingxiu, every note is a step toward mastering an art form he loves, and he couldn’t be prouder of the progress he’s made.
