Yanxi (Yancey) Liu

Junior Division

Prelude in D flat major, op. 28, no. 15

Just turning 10 years old, young pianist, Yanxi (Yancey) Liu, a Garde 5 student at St. George's School, has already spent the majority of his life immersed in music. His piano journey began at the age of three when he started playing the piano as if it were a toy, quickly displaying an extraordinary ability to play melodies by ear. Formal piano lessons commenced when he was four, under the nurturing guidance of encouraging teachers, whose patience and positive approach gave him both structure and freedom in his musical development. His perfect pitch has been a significant asset, allowing him to understand and learn complex compositions quickly, fine-tune his performance, and articulate and perform with emotion and confidence.

A passionate lover of classical music, Yancey spends hours listening to pieces like piano sonatas and concertos by Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, and Rachmaninoff. His ability to focus on listening to the music while reading scores for extended periods, often for three hours at a time, was remarkable even when he was six. He enjoys improvising, using his creativity to build on his natural musicality and technical foundation to express himself effectively.

In addition to piano, he has taken up violin and participates in chamber music camps every summer. His deep love for music history, especially details about his favorite composers, reflects his intellectual curiosity and dedication. Beyond music, he is passionate about math, geography, reading, skiing, basketball, and baseball, bringing a well-rounded approach to life and music.
